CAMPO Tapestry
A Junco Field, Woven by Hand
Crafted from wild soft rush harvested along the banks of the Tagus River, just beyond the Serra dos Candeeiros, the CAMPO Tapestry evokes the silent landscapes familiar to the basketry heartland of Castanheira. This piece honors nature and craft.
Carefully composed thread by thread on a loom, the tapestry utilizes the rarely used flower top section of the rush. Each junco straw is meticulously selected and placed by hand to represent the moment of its collection from nature in its raw state. Each straw of junco is woven and placed to appear natural, establishing a direct connection with its origin and craftmanship and savoir faire. The weaving pattern builds in crescendo, mimicking the vertical rhythm of the plant in its natural environment. Its distinctive striped motif references the straps used to tie bundles of junco, reinterpreted in cotton and woven as the same time as the weft is inserted — a signature of the collection, made possible through TOINO ABEL’s own looms.
Due to its composition, each piece is inherently unique. The organic variation of the raw material, combined with the slow, attentive process of weaving, ensures that no two pieces are alike. This process requires not only craftsmanship but also an artist’s sensitivity. Indeed, this piece is personally crafted by Nuno Henriques, the founder of TOINO ABEL, who is trained in Fine Arts.
The tapestry is available in half-a-meter pieces sold individually. Due to its slow production and handcrafted nature, it is possible to create this piece in wider dimensions, either individually, as a pair, or in other formations. For custom requests, please contact us at TOINO ABEL.
The CAMPO Tapestry is part of a three-piece home collection developed during the Plant-Based Design Residency, curated by Passa Ao Futuro within the Made In Platform for Contemporary Crafts & Design, supported by the European Union.
